Speaker 1:

Can you believe they have the audacity? Welcome to the have the Audacity podcast. I'm your host, jacey Lawlin. I'm on a mission to empower women like you to live audaciously. What does it mean to live audaciously, you ask? Living audaciously means you're no longer available for living your life based on someone else's agenda, standards or boundaries. It's time to activate your power, use your voice and create the life you're meant to live. So the next time someone asks, can you believe she had the audacity, you can look at them and say, yeah, I did. Hey, audacious Human, I'm so glad that you're here for today's episode. Hey, audacious Human, I'm so glad that you're here for today's episode and we are just going to jump right in.

Speaker 1:

I recently heard this quote and I knew I had to bring it to you to share. It was by Ralph Waldo Emerson and in this quote he said to know that even one life breathed easier because you have lived this is to have success. Now, how simple, yet impactful and powerful is that definition of success. Like I'm going to read it again Raffaldo Emerson said to know that even one life breathed easier because you have lived this is to have success. Now, if you're listening to this in America, I feel like this can be true in most places, but since I live in America, I'm going to speak to. What I know is the we have the American dream. Everybody in the world knows about the American dream and the American dream version of success, and we're going to look at that and how we're taught in America to view success and how there's so much freedom in this shift towards this definition that Ralph Waldo Emerson gave us. And so the American dream. If you're unfamiliar, if you are, let's recap You'll be like yes, this is totally how it happens.

Speaker 1:

So what is the American dream? It's this idea that anyone can have success. It's about material success. It's the belief that if you work hard and acquire enough wealth, you can achieve happiness and fulfillment in life. The more wealth you have, the more things you can acquire, the more power you have, the nicer car you drive, the bigger house you have, the nicer things, the more designer labels. That is where the American dream comes from and that is what we're taught to chase the wealth, the power. That is success. That is success. But is it? And if that's the definition of success that you're subscribing to right now, how is that serving you? How's that going? Is it making you feel great, is it lighting you up, like, how is it really serving you? And we can look on this a broader term. You know, like in the world generally, we can all agree on this Wealth, nice, designer labeled things, power, real estate, all these worldly material possessions. Material possessions is the key there. The more stuff you have, the more success you have.

Speaker 1:

So if you're walking out and about and you see somebody roll up in a Rolls Royce and get out with their designer clothes and their Rolls Royce, you look at them like, wow, they're successful. That person is successful. As you see another person get out of a beat up older car with their secondhand consignment shop clothes and think, wow, I bet that person is wishing that they were the person with the Rolls Royce. Because that's what we're taught. That's what we're taught to think that you can't be satisfied with where you are right now or feel successful with where you are right now in your life because you haven't achieved the thing that is deemed successful by everybody else. And we get caught in this rat race and we're never happy, we're never fulfilled. We become so disconnected with ourself that we're so burned out and sick and we have all these stress-caused diseases and our health is horrible and we're just constantly going in this debt cycle because we just have to keep up. If we just keep going, we just do more, we'll get there. If we just keep running, and nine times out of 10, you're exhausted and then you get these people who have been there and they're on their deathbed. It's like one of the top regrets that people that have come up from people on their deathbed and that is that they wish they would have just been happy with what they had realized, what they had while they had it, instead of looking outward. But no fault to them. That's how we're taught. That's how you keep the machine going Always looking outside of yourself.

Speaker 1:

Looking outside of yourself for your value, your purpose, your success, your meaning, all of it, when really you have the power to decide what is successful for you. That gets out of a Rolls Royce. In their designer clothes, they may define success as having close friendships and having people that intimately know them, and maybe that's their definition of success, and right now they don't know anybody in their life that they can really trust. That is there because of them and not there for what they can give them or the access they can give them. So is that person really feeling successful by this American dream? In the world definitions, yeah, they look successful. But if they don't feel it by their own definition of success, then in reality they're not the person who gets out with their consignment clothes and their older model vehicle. They may define success by having a roof over their head, food to eat and having the opportunity to show up for the people around them. That's their definition of success and they're meeting it. So they're more fulfilled than the person who, on the outside, looks like they have everything.

Speaker 1:

And I'm not saying that everybody who has a lot of money and power and wealth and all those worldly quote-unquote success things does not feel like they're successful. But we get lost on the wrong thing. Reality is not every single person in the world is meant to be in the top one percent. Not every single person in the world is meant to be in the top 1%. That's why it's the top 1%. But that doesn't mean you're not successful right now, even if you're not where you want to be. It's okay to have goals, but we're not tying our goals to being successful with who we are as a person. We can have goals that drive us, keep us moving. I have goals, but what really is successful If you have a podcast?

Speaker 1:

Are you only successful if you have a million listeners? So all the time you're doing you're not successful. If you don't have a million listeners, then like you're a failure. No, you showed up. Redefine success.

Speaker 1:

I personally am adopting Ralph Waldo Emerson's definition of success. To know that even one life breathes easier because you have lived this is to have success. This podcast is successful. If at any point I have positively impacted your life, this was successful. It's not about what success looks like on the outside to the world. It's what does success mean? Like to you? And that is what I want to challenge you is to really look at. How am I defining success for my life right now? How am I defining success in my career, in my personal life, in whatever situation it is? How are you defining what is successful If you're trying to lose weight? Are you only successful when you get to the end? Are you successful when you showed up for yourself today?

Speaker 1:

What is success To me is to know that one life breathed easier because I lived, that I made a positive impact in their life. That's success for me. If I go to bed at night and know that at least one person that I encountered in that day breathed easier because they interacted with me. That was success. So I really want you to think about that. That's what I want to leave you with today. I want to leave you with this challenge to define what does success mean for you, and I would love to hear it. You can now click in the show notes. At the very top there's a send us a text message. It's just me, I'm the us, it comes right to me and we can chat about it. I would love to hear what success is to you, and I have some cool things that I'm cooking up on Instagram. So if you have Instagram links in the show notes, if you're not following me, you want to follow me, because there's some cool stuff coming All wrapped around to this whole definition. To know that if one life breathes easier because you lift this is to have success.

Living with this phrase in mind in today's world is such a truly audacious thing for you to do so until the next time I talk to you, remember, have the audacity.
